Schmid flares come in three sizes: medium, like an Alexander 103 or a Holton H178; wide, similar to a Paxman L bell; and extra-wide, like a Conn 8D. There are four alloys to choose from: yellow brass-wide and dark, gold brass-a little more resistant, dark at soft volume levels and gradually brightening with the crecendo, nickel silver-bright and ringing, and sterling silver-a unique sound of remarkable depth and intensity.

A garland adds stability and a little more resistance-useful in many playing situations.

Hand-hammered bells are made in the traditional manner; a sheet of brass is cut to the approximate shape of the bell and fastened with a brazed seam. The construction technique involves much less deformation of the metal and the sound produced is one of complexity and subtlety. (All sterling silver bells are hand-hammered.)
