Yakov Solomonovich Shapiro was principal horn of the Soviet Army Symphony Orchestra from 1933 to 1935 and again from 1941 to 1943. Following military service, he was principal horn of the USSR State Symphony from 1936 to 1941, and the USSR State Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1943 until his retirement in the 1960's. The two pieces on this historic recording are the Brahms Horn Trio in E-flat, Op.40 and the Schumann Konzertstuck in F, Op.86 for four horns & orchestra.
