Open Mouthpiece Throat

Item #: RSOT
Service: Open Mouthpiece Throat

The stock throat in most trumpet mouthpieces (and many horn mouthpieces) is the smallest practical size, usually 27 or 28 for trumpet and 16-17 for horn. This used to be called a "pilot hole" and it was assumed that most players would enlarge it. A larger throat reduces resistance and can also balance a large or deep cup. Bore sizes in the range 18-26 work well with trumpets. Most hornists feel most comfortable with a throat in the 10-16 range. Larger sizes work best with very large cups.

Open Backbore

Item #: RSOB
Service: Open Mouthpiece Backbore

Every mouthpiece maker makes his own backbore reamers. While there is much debate as to the best shape to use the best scientific evidence shows that the most important parameters are the volume and the length of the throat. Use a more parabolic backbore shape to create a larger volume without shortening the throat.

We use three standard reamers:

#1-Very slightly parabolic, similar to a Bach #10 backbore.

#2-More parabolic, with larger volume similar to a Bach #24.

#3-Pronounced parabolic shape tends to lift high register, making it suitable for piccolo trumpet mouthpieces. Very large volume. Similar to a Bach #117 Backbore.

Each of our backbores can be plunged deeper into the mouthpiece, creating a larger volume with the same intonation characteristics. We use .100" steps and mark them 1.1, 1.2, etc. So, if you want a #2 backbore that is .200" deeper than standard, specify 2.2 and we'll know what to make you.
